The Top 30 Hard Rock Albums of All Time
In the new Hotpress, (published Thursday, April 24th) Peter Murphy analyses how Hard-rock has taken on many forms, ranging from psychedelia to grunge. “But,” says Murphy, “if it's hard-riffing and loud enough to annoy the neighbours, it should be categorised as good old-fashioned metal.”
With that in mind, Perer Murphy guides everyone through the Hot Press selection of the Top 30 HARD ROCK albums of all time.
“As regards technical criteria,” Hot Press explains, “compilations were disqualified, but live albums were not, because live albums are totally HARD ROCK. Also, multiple entries by a single artist were out of the question, because Motorhead and AC/DC would’ve hogged the entire Top 20.”
While the list is mainly dominated by the big American hard hitters, Thin Lizzy’s Live and Dangerous and Therapy?’s Troublegum both took the 6th and 22nd positions. Rory Gallagher was not included,as he was considered more a blues than a heavy metal artist.
The top spot was swiped by Guns N’Roses for their album Appetite for Destruction. Guns N’ Roses embodied danger and charisma, rejoicing in glam-punk cred and scuzzy songs about smack and urban paranoia. “For about five minutes, G&R were the latest, greatest bad-ass rock ‘n’ roll band in the world,” Hot Press says.
The list includes such greats as Led Zeppelin’s IV, due to its sheer sonic impact, Paranoid by Black Sabbath, represented the point where metal evolved from the blues rock roots of Cream and Hendrix to become self-consciously and unapologetically theatrical and tribal.
Below is the Top TEN
For complete results, see the new Hot Press
1 Appetite For Destruction – Guns N’ Roses (1987)
2 Back In Black – AC/DC (1980)
3 No Sleep Til Hammersmith – Motorhead (1981)
4 Led Zeppelin IV – Led Zeppelin (1971)
5 Songs For The Deaf – Queens Of The Stone Age (2002)
6 Live And Dangerous – Thin Lizzy (1977)
7 Ritual De Lo Habitual – Jane’s Addiction (1990)
8 Paranoid – Black Sabbath (1970)
9 Metallica – Metallica (1991)
10 Machine Head – Deep Purple (1972)
Classic Rock, in their current issue, list the top 50 best live band. Thin Lizzy come in at a very respectable #19 with the following words...............
#19 THIN LIZZY....HARD ROCKERS WHO GAVE US ONE OF THE GREATEST LIVE ALBUMS EVER......................"In their pomp, Thin Lizzy set live standards othersstruggled to come close to achieving.. The magical twin guitar combinations of Scott Gorham with Brian Robertson, Gary Moore or John Sykes inspired many staring agape in the audience, while the late Philip Lynott was the consumate frontman and geezer who appealed to both sexes." FACT: Duringf their 1977 UK tour, Lizzy rode from gig to gig in a limo. Cool rock stars? Not quite, because all the gear was in the boot, which had to be tied down with a wire coat hanger"
Who made number one.....ahhhhh that will spoil the surprise before you buy the magazine. That free plug is on me Classic Rock :)
