It is with great sadness that I have just heard the news that the Irish singer and entertainer Joe Dolan has died at the Mater private hospital in Dublin.

His studio music was either loved or loathed but anyone who ever witnessed his live show had perceptions changed

His legendary live performances led to the popular phrase "there is no show like a Joe show"

Joe was taken ill at his home in Foxrock last (Christmas) night and died just after 3pm this afternoon from a suspected brain haemorrhage

Joe had not been feeling well of late and had reluctantly cancelled his sold out Christmas shows

Joe, originally from Mullingar in Westmeath, Ireland had enjoyed musical success in Ireland and around the world for over 40 years

He played many stints in Las Vegas during his long career

With his band the Drifters his first chart success came in Ireland with 'The Answer to Everything' in 1964 but he is best perhaps known for songs that were more internationally famous such as 'Good Looking Woman' and 'Make Me an Island'

In recent years his studio album sales underwent a resurgence with the release of two albums

"Joe 90's" - where he credibly covered songs by artists such as Blur, Oasis, and Pulp

"21st Century Joe". This Album was equally successful and it included songs by David Bowie, U2, REM and Bruce Springsteen and Thin Lizzy !

May he Rest in Peace
I was deeply saddened to hear of Joe's death.
I had the pleasure of meeting Joe in person a few times and I have to say, he was a complete and utter gentleman. His attitude on and off stage never differed and he loved meeting people and entertaining. It was his life and he did it with text-book style.
I also had the ultimate pleasure of meeting Joe's former and life-long drummer, Tony Newman (The original Drifters) on many occasions. A gentle Giant, Tony also passed away about 4 years ago from Cancer. His position in the Joe Show was filled by a friend of mine from Tuam in Galway, Jason Fallon.

Rest in Peace, Joe. You did your job with pride.
